Dear Brothers and Sisters:
The Utah and National elections of 2010 may be the most important in generations. Utah & National voters are faced with a clear choice.
This year’s election we have a clear choice and opportunity to elect labor & family friendly officials and a great opportunity to elect a new Governor. For over 20 years we have had to deal with an overwhelming one party system in the State of Utah. We have witnessed during this time of “All Powerful” one party dominance that has led to “All Powerful Corruption”, “Government by Crisis”, and “Big Business Interests” taking over, leaving working families, children, senior citizens, and consumers struggling to have our voices heard.
So far this year we have witnessed a new enthusiasm, solidarity, and a sense of “we really can make a difference in this years elections”. We cannot let those feeling dissipate, indeed we must build upon them complete our work for the Tuesday, November 2nd elections and continue to demand that working families, children, and senior citizens voices be heard.
The Republican Party has been taken over by the radical right wing of their party, and Utah’s citizens are demanding “change”. This will truly be an “opportunity 2010” to elect a labor friendly Governor.
Brothers and Sisters I don’t need to tell you, you are the “choir” the “backbone and strength” of the Utah Labor Movement; but we do need to tell our membership again and again, and again, then say it with our vote on Tuesday, November 2, 2010.
If we are to continue to fight the battle and face our adversaries at the Utah Legislature, in city halls, at the collective bargaining table, and elsewhere to protect our Utah Labor Movement, our local unions, our members, and our families, WE MUST be financially prepared. If we are to be successful, WE MUST raise enough money to allow good candidates to get the real issues before the people. WE MUST be prepared now with the educational programs that will enhance Utah Labor’s largest participation ever. THIS YEAR’S CENTURY CLUB IS THE VEHICLE THAT WILL BE USED TO DEVELOP AND INITIATE SUCH PROGRAMS.
Membership in our Utah AFL-CIO Labor Century Club, ($100 per membership) is open to all union members. We encourage all local union officers to join. Inasmuch as finances of the Century Club will be used for membership educational programs, UNIONS MAY USE TREASURY MONEY (GENERAL ACCOUNT) TO ENROLL THEIR OFFICERS AND MEMBERS IN THE CLUB WITHOUT SUBJECTING TREASURY MONEY INTEREST TO I.R.S. TAX.
Each Member will receive an attractive lapel pin identifying them as a 2010 member of the Utah Labor Century Club. Also, an HONOR ROLL WILL BE SENT TO ALL Utah local unions and displayed in prominent locations listing unions and members who have joined.
The membership dues ($100 per member) when viewed as protection of our contracts and the standard of living we have been able to achieve for our members and workers in general, it is but a small cost. Those who work to weaken or destroy our labor movement, continue to give more and more. TO FIGHT EFFECTIVELY FOR OUR RIGHTS, WE MUST HAVE YOUR SUPPORT AND CONTRIBUTIONS.
We in Utah’s free trade union movement have never gained anything without a fight, nor are we going to give up anything without a fight. FURTHERMORE, WE HAVE NOT FORGOTTEN HOW TO FIGHT!
